High Point University High Point University (HPU) is a private university in High Point, North Carolina. It is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The university was founded as High Point College in 1924, and it became High Point University in 1991. The High Point Panthers are the 17 varsity athletic teams that all compete at the NCAA Division I level. All sports except men's lacrosse and women's rowing compete in the Big South Conference. The men's lacrosse team joined the Atlantic 10 Conference after the 2022 season. Women's rowing was added in 2024-25, initially competing as an independent until joining the new rowing league of the Mid-American Conference in 2025-26. The Panthers joined Division I in 1999, after having been NCAA Division II and being members of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) prior to 1992. The men's basketball team began varsity play in 1927-28 and participated in the NAIA national tournament seven times between 1939 and 1979 and in the NCAA Division II Tournament in 1997. Their current coach Flynn Clayman is in only his first year as a head coach after spending time as High Point's associate head coach the previous two seasons. Their players come from all over the world including the foreign countries of Spain, Luxembourg, Iceland, Australia, Mali, and Florida. They play in an INCREDIBLE arena, the Qubein Center which just opened in 2021 at a construction cost of $170 million. Qubein Center, High

And get this for High Point's First Round game in Portland, Oregon, High Point chartered a plane to transport 200 students to support the Panthers in their game against No. 5 seed Wisconsin. Well, it worked. No. 12 seed High Point upset No. 5 Wisconsin, 83-82, for High Point's first Tournament win. Ryan Donaldson, a High Point University junior, who made the trip said this to Christian Gladney of abc45 News before heading out: "I m just really grateful for the opportunity
getting to cheer on our Panthers. You know,
back-to-back years winning the Big South tournament. We
were at the arena during the Selection Show [and] it's hard to put into words
how awesome this all is." It shows that High Point cares about us. You know, you re not just a number here. I mean, we re a smaller school, but we re on the map now. I have a good feeling about it. We re going to stay through Saturday, and watch them win on Saturday as well. Well, not sure if they will win on Saturday when HPU takes on No. 4 Arkansas, but Ryan will be there. |
